Japan’s imperial couple start for visit to India

    Tokyo: Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko Saturday left for India for a week-long visit, marking the first to the country by a Japanese emperor and empress.

    The visit under the Indian government’s invitation is to commemorate the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties between the two countries, reported Xinhua.

    They are expected to meet Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in an effort to promote bilateral relationships.

    The imperial couple last visited India in 1960 as the crown prince and the crown princess.
