Amritsar : As onion prices surged to Rs.70-90 per kg levels recently, Indian traders have imported onions from Afghanistan, with the first consignment of 24 tonnes arrived at Attari border Thursday.
Ordered by a Delhi-based company dealing in vegetables, the onions were imported from Afghanistan after Pakistan did not respond to a request for onions.
The onions consignment was unloaded by the integrated check post (ICP) at Attari.
Traders said that onion prices were still fluctuating at the Rs.50 per kg level and if the price remained high, nearly 1,000 tonnes of onions could be imported from Afghanistan.
In the past, onions have been imported from Pakistan whenever its prices have gone up in India.
