United Nations : UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has held talks with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, with both sides stressing on the need for additional fund to help Syrian refugees in Iraq.
“The secretary-general briefed the Minister on the latest peace efforts for Syria, following last night’s Security Council resolution,” reported Xinhua citing UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky here. “He thanked Iraq for its generous hospitality to Syrian refugees.”
“The secretary-general and minister both underlined the need for additional resources to be made available to assist Iraq to meet the humanitarian needs related to the refugees,” the spokesman said.
The Syrian conflict, which broke out in March 2011, prompted a massive influx of Syrian refugees into neighbouring countries, such as Turkey, Jordan and Iraq.
On Friday night, the Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in a bid to rid the war-torn Syria of chemical weapons.
