Poll panel allows signing pact for two more Kudankulam units

Chennai : The Election Commission has given its nod to department of atomic energy (DAE) for signing an agreement for purchase of two 1,000 MW nuclear reactors to be set up in Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu, said a senior official.

“The Election Commission has given its nod to DAE to proceed ahead for signing of agreement for third and fourth units in Kudankulam. The sanction has been communicated to Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL),” the department official, who did not want to be identified, told IANS.

According to him, the NPCIL will have to talk with its Russian counterpart and proceed further.

The NPCIL has set up two atomic power plants of 1,000 MW each at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district around 650 km from here.

The first unit is generating power though commercial operation has not started while the second unit is under construction.
