AMU organises World Disability Day

Aligarh: The Disability Unit, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Wednesday organized a programme on the World Disability Day with an objective to bring together all the differently-abled students by providing them an exclusive platform to share their feelings, enrich from the academic exchanges and in the process improve their understanding, acumen and skills as a student.

Encouraging the differently-abled students, Brigadier Syed Ahmed Ali, AMU pro-Vice Chancellor, said the University administration is working hard to solve their issues as early as possible. He also announced that the brail section of Maulana Azad Library will be shifted to the new building and all the modern facilities will be provided for them, Dr Rahat Abrar, AMU PRO, said in a release here.

Dr Abdul Hamid Fazili, coordinator, Disability Unit, claimed that the Disability Unit has successfully resolved issues faced by these students pertaining to admissions, hostel accommodation, scholarships, dining hall and other necessary amenities. He said the World Disability Day is observed since 1992 to promote an understating of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of students with disabilities.

Prof Abdul Waheed also addressed on the occasion. Students associated with the Unit displayed their talent by making speeches and reciting poems. Awards and certificates to the meritorious students for their academic endeavors were also given. The programme was conducted by Dr Bilal Ahmed Kutty, counselor cum placement officer, Disability Unit, who said the theme of this year’s World Disability Day – “Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology” – will help create awareness regarding disability, the release added.
