Onus of workers’ security can’t be put on government: Maneka

New Delhi : Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi Monday said the private company should look after the security concerns of their workers, as the onus of the same cannot be put on the government alone.

“Every company that employs women should look after them. I won’t say that women shouldn’t work in night shifts but where they work during night is important,” the minister told reporters here.

The minister also said the proposal to start women’s taxi service is being looked into.

On whether the government should make checking credentials of cab drivers mandatory before their appointment, the minister asked: “Do they (the companies) need it?”

“We can mandate it, but will they implement it,” she asked.

“It will happen, it is the idea … Time has come and the government has given us permission to start with 50 women’s taxis,” she said.

More women’s taxis will be added to the fleet and proper training would be given to the drivers, she said.

On Friday night, a woman was allegedly raped by a cab driver in Delhi.
