Trinamool workers protest Bengal minister’s arrest

Kolkata: Slogan-shouting Trinamool Congress workers demonstrated outside the CBI office here Friday night protesting the arrest of party leader and West Bengal Minister Madan Mitra in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.

Around 50-60 Trinamool workers, carrying party flags, dubbed the arrest a “political conspiracy” and urged people to be united against it.

“Madan Mitra zindabad”, “We are with Madan Mitra”, the workers shouted.

Later, when police brought out Mitra from the CBI office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake area to shift him to the local police station, angry Trinamool activists tried to stop the car and banged on it.

Some of them tried to obstruct the car, but later relented.

On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party workers at Salt Lake smeared each other with gulal and distributed sweets to celebrate Mitra’s arrest.

At Baharampur in Murshidabad district, Congress workers burst fire crackers and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The 57-year-old minister was nabbed by the probe agency after hours of grilling spread over two sessions by CBI sleuths during the day at its office here.
