US Senate passes bill to avoid government shutdown

Washington : The US Senate approved a temporary extension of federal funding Saturday afternoon, saving the government from shutting down again.

The funding extension was approved in a voice vote. It will maintain the operation of government through Wednesday and give lawmakers more time to resolve the fight on the spending bill which is worth $1.1 trillion, Xinhua reported.

The spending bill will finance the federal government through September next year, except for the Department of Homeland Security, which would get an extension only through Feb 27.

The US House of Representatives passed the bill narrowly with a vote of 219 to 206, as Democrats opposed the bill which has some provisions to loosen financial supervisions.

The White House said Thursday it supported House passage of the spending bill and appreciated the bipartisan effort to include full-year appropriation legislation for most government functions.
