New Delhi : The NHRC has directed the Tamil Nadu government to take appropriate action against police officers for allegedly torturing a man and also provide the victim a compensation of Rs.15,000, officials said Monday.
The National Human Rights Commission has asked for a compliance report from the state chief secretary along with a proof of payment within six weeks.
“The case was registered in 2010 on the basis of a complaint from the victim alleging that the Tamil Nadu Police had falsely implicated, arrested and subjected him to severe physical torture in custody,” said the commission.
The NHRC found that two cases were registered against the complainant and his colleague and the charge sheets were already filed in court.
Therefore, it observed that the correctness or otherwise of these cases is to be decided only by the court, it said.
The commission found that the complainant was tortured during his police custody and it has recommended that the Tamil Nadu government pay monetary relief to the victim and take appropriate action against the police officers.
