Rizwan Ahmad appointed DGP of UP, first Muslim to hold this office

    Lucknow: Facing flak from the all quarter for the inept handling of the Muzaffarnagar riots, Akhilesh Yadav led Uttar Pradesh Government has appointed IPS Rizwan Ahmad, 1978-batch IPS officer, as the new Director General of Police (DGP). He is the first Muslim to assume the post in the state.

    He replaced Deo Raj Nagar, who retired on Tuesday. Ahmad will be retiring in February 2014, so he will be DGP for just two months.

    Another Muslim officer, Jawed Usmani, holds the post of the Chief Secretary in the AKhilesh led government.

    The Samajwadi party government which rode on the minority vote to come to power has been facing severe beatings from all quarter for the handling of the Muzaffarnagar riots.
