Mumbai: The Shiv Sena Saturday lashed out at Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar for ridiculing its “shiv-bandhan” pledge taken here two days ago (Jan 23).
“Those who have cheated people all through can never understand the difference between the thread and the ‘bandhan’ (bond). Now, will the festival of ‘Rakshabandhan’ be brought under the ambit of the anti-superstions act?” Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said in a statement here.
If that happens, his party would oppose it, he declared, taking objections to Pawar’s remarks on the Sena’s initiative during its “Pledge Day” rally at Somaiya Ground on the 88th birth anniversary of the party’s founder-patriarch Bal Thackeray.
At the rally, Thackeray had led the party to take a pledge to capture power in the next Lok Sabha and subsequent Maharashtra Assembly elections by solemnly tying a thread on each other’s wrists to express a bond of loyalty with the party.
Reacting to the initiative, Pawar had alleged that “this violated the anti-superstitions act – and I am waiting to see what action the (state) government takes”.
