Chennai: State government of Tamil Nadu has requested the TN Backward Class’ Commission to render necessary recommendations “at an early date” based on the plea made for increasing the quantum of reservation for Muslims in education and employment.
On January 28, 2014, Tamilnadu Thowheed Jamath, had organized jail bharo protest to pressure state government to increase the reservation in which around 20 lakh Muslims participated the protest in four cities of the state.
Following to the protest, TNTJ’s general body meeting was held on 23rd February and set the week deadline for the government to implement reservation and also decided to have its state executive committee meeting on 2rd March 2014 to decide its support in upcoming Loksabha elections.
The organization had demanded that the existing quantum of 3.5 per cent be increased to seven per cent. A letter was sent by K. Arulmozhi, Principal Secretary of the State Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department to Member Secretary of the Commission, on Friday.
On March 2, TNTJ State executive committee had decided to announce its support once the election date is declared and ensured that the support will be rendered only based on reservation and it will on the interest of society.
