Mumbai: At a time when all hopes faded and no one believed the family of 6 Muslim accused persons that the arrested were innocent and implicated by Gujarat police in the Akshardham attack case, it was only Jamiat Ulema Hind who supported these accused when they represented these accused persons before special POTA court. The Jamiat was convinced that they were innocent and hence did not leave them even after their sentencing by Special POTA court and represented them before High Court as well as the Supreme Court.
The Jamiat Ulema is showing their full determination to not leave these 6 innocent men after the judgment and has indicated that they shall now fight for compensation from Government for losing 11 precious years of these men’s lives.
In a press conference, the Jamiat Ulema President Maulana Syed Arshad Madani said that their organization has spent Rs. 55 Lacs in last 11 years to defend these accused and they were relieved now with the Supreme Court proving the men their organization supported were not terrorists.
Maulana Madani said, “Now we will fight for compensation from Government and to punish the erring police officials who destroyed life of these 6 innocent men. We will shortly file petition before Supreme Court in this regard”.
“There are two different measures of delivering justice in this country. When the minority people are measured with one inconsiderate way others are measured with soft and caring way. There is an agenda which is run in the country to malign Muslims and to propagate them as terrorists while the history of Muslims’ participation in the freedom struggle of the country and their sacrifices are systematically being ignored,” he said adding, “If there would not have been for Supreme Court in the country many innocent, victims of police abuses, would have continued to live behind bars.”
He did not forget to mention the duplicity of electronic and print media and said, “The media always play a negative role by dubbing arrests of the Muslims as big breakthroughs in terror cases and try to prove the charges themselves only through their one sided analysis but when acquittal happens, no one covers it. No one is bothered that they have been acquitted after 11 years.”
Gulzar Azmi, General Secretary of Jamiat Ulama Legal Cell , said that they are fighting 350 cases around the country and with their help many people are being saved from going to the gallows under false charges and that they stand by the accused of 2006 Malegaon blasts and 7/11 train serial blasts cases till proven innocent.
“The Jamiat Ulema hired the services of top criminal lawyers, including former solicitor-general Amrindar Sharan, for pleading the case of the innocent Muslim youths. They were wrongly convicted by the designated POTA court and High Court but the sentencing proved wrong before Supreme Court”, Guzar Azmi said with a smile.
If the Jamiat Ulema would not have come forward to help these innocent men they could perhaps been prosecuted for crimes they never committed.
