Mumbai: A tribute book on Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer, “Striving for Peace & Harmony” has been published by Bhashya Prakashan edited by Ram Puniyani & Irfan Engineer on the occasion of his one year death anniversary.

The volume is a compilation of tributes written by his close friends, associates and those admiring his work and captures facets of his commitment, dedication and striving for the causes he espoused. Many of the articles do capture the modest, humane, and extremely friendly nature of Dr. Engineer.

Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer has been a major champion of human rights in recent times. His area of work spanned from the struggle for reform in Bohra Community, investigations and analysis of communal violence, striving for communal amity and interpretation of Islam. In all these major areas his contributions have been immense.

He was a scholar activist who contributed in a prolific manner on all these topics, his contributions are a major landmark in these areas of activism and scholarship. During the process he was instrumental in forming various organization, including Centre for Study of Society and Secularism, of which he was the founding chairman. He authored and edited over 70 books. He is receipt of innumerable awards for his work; the major one’s being the National Communal Award and the Right Livelihood Award (Alternate Nobel Prize) in 1997 and 2004 respectively.

A human rights activist, Director of Centre for Study of Society and Secularism, is a profile writer on the issues of communal violence, rights or religious minorities, and communal harmony.
