“Police exercised maximum restraint while dealing with the angry protesters,” a senior police officer told IANS here, adding that the situation was “under control”.

The Army said a Maruti car carrying four persons had jumped mobile vehicle check posts (MVCPs) set up to trace guerrillas following which the soldiers fired at them.

Two youths, identified as Faisal Yusuf Bhat and Mehrajuddin Dar, died in the incident while the other two were critically wounded.

The army has regretted the loss of lives and ordered an enquiry assuring that those found responsible would be severely punished.

Amit Kumar, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Srinagar, said that none of the four youths travelling in the car had any militant connection as per police records.
