Kolkata : A city-based rights group Monday filed a petition seeking a Calcutta High Court-monitored probe into the lynching and alleged bobbitisation of a man at the NRS Medical College and Hospital.
Alleging that the West Bengal administration and the hospital authorities were destroying crucial evidences to hush up the matter, the petition was filed before the bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Arijit Banerjee, by the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR).
The body of 28-year-old Korpan Sha was recovered from the boys’ hostel of NRS Nov 16. He was found tied to a pillar and beaten to death with bamboo sticks allegedly by a group of junior doctors and students. The attackers even allegedly inflicted injuries on his genitals.
“More than a week has passed but not a single culprit has been identified or arrested. Besides the immediate need for a court-monitored probe, we have also requested for an order for payment of Rs.10 lakh as compensation and a job for Sha’s kin,” APDR counsel Sushmita Saha Dutta said.
APDR, which has approached the National Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention in the matter, also pleaded for punishment for the hospital authorities and police officials for dereliction of duty.
Meanwhile, the Left Front too has demanded an independent probe into the killing.
“There is an immediate need to arrest the culprits. Therefore, we demand an immediate and independent probe,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose said.
The Paschim Banga Rajya Pratibandhi Sammilani – a body of special schools and NGOs working in the field of disability – Monday held a rally demanding justice for Sha, who following an accident and the death of his mother, became mentally unstable.
