Only three Muslims qualify the Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2014

New Delhi: Three Muslim candidates – from among the total 238 – have qualified for admission to the 138th Course of Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala and Air Force Academy, Hyderabad, according to the list of successful candidates released by the Union Public Service Commission on November 24.

Altamash Siddiqui, Irshad Hussain and Saddam Khan have qualified for military academy while Khan has also qualified for the Indian Naval Academy, a release from the Ministry of Defense said here. Not a single Muslim qualified for the Air Force Academy.

This year, a total of 238 candidates qualified overall. The number of Muslim candidates has been going down regularly over the years. For instance, in June 2014, there were seven candidates among the 570 new recruits, in June 2013, there were as many as 11 who made it to the final list and in March 2011, there were seven from among the 351 successful candidates.

Currently, the number of vacancies, as intimated by the government is 250 for the Military academy, 40 for Indian Naval Academy and 32 for Air Force Academy. Similar to Khan, there are some common candidates in the three lists for various courses.
