Kuala Lumpur : Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak Saturday said the new provisions to improve and strengthen the Sedition Act will be tabled at the next parliament sitting.
Najib has called for sternness from the attorney-general and asked the police and the Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission to carry out appropriate investigations on those charged under the Sedition Act, reported Xinhua citing Malaysian daily The Star.
At the general assembly of Malaysia’s ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Najib said that the Act was retained in a bid to maintain national peace and harmony, as well as to handle the action of certain groups that disputed the federal constitution.
Najib, who is also UMNO president, said that the special rights and privileges of the Malays, rulers and Islam, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, should not be questioned any more.
“There is a limit to freedom. Freedom is not absolute. (One) cannot insult Islam, cannot challenge the special rights and privileges of the Malays, cannot question the monarchy system, the Royal Malay Regiment and we safeguard the interests of other races, ” he added.
