Chandigarh : With a record 109 women in the fray, 1,350 candidates will contest the Oct 15 assembly elections for 90 seats in Haryana, election department officials said Wednesday.
With 168 withdrawals Wednesday, 1,350 candidates finally remain in the fray for the assembly polls. These include 1,241 male and 109 female candidates. Wednesday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations.
“The ensuing elections to the Haryana Assembly will see record number of 109 women in the fray, the highest ever since the inception of Haryana in 1966. This distinction was earlier held by the 1996 assembly elections which witnessed 93 female contestants,” Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Shrikant Walgad said here.
Walgad said that the maximum number of six women candidates are in the race for the Ateli assembly constituency, whereas the maximum number of 31 male candidates are in the fray from the Bhiwani assembly constituency.
