Aligarh participates with gusto in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan

Aligarh: Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) with a large scale cleanliness drive as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.

The drive was launched by AMU Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah, who also inaugurated an exhibition of letters, books and photographs of Mahatma Gandhi at the Maulana Azad Library.

The Vice Chancellor also administered a pledge “to preserve and strengthen the freedom and integrity of the nation.”

Shah also announced that AMU will help to create modern Sir Syed Public Schools on the pattern of the Delhi Public School (DPS). He said the university had decided to establish a school at Jaula village in Muzaffarnagar district on a land that the villagers have agreed to donate. The AMU has already received a donation of Rs 1.5 crore from AMU alumni and other organizations while the cost of construction is estimated at Rs 2 crore, a release from AMU PRO Dr Rahat Abrar said.


Painting Competition has been held in the Jamia Oxford Public School on the occasion of birth anniversary of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

AMU staff and students will contribute Rs 51 lakh for the riot-affected students of Muzaffar, the release said.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Brig S Ahmad Ali, Prof S M Hashim of the Department of Urdu and Prof Irfan Ahmad, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences too spoke on the occasion. AMU students Musabbeh-ur-Rahman Manazir and Vardha Manzar also expressed their views.

Elsewhere in Aligarh, a painting competition on the theme of ‘Clean Environment and Development of Nation’ was held at the Jamia Oxford Public School. Students from class 7th till 12th participated in the competition, according to a release by Jasmin Mohammad, director of the school.
