New Delhi : An umbrella body of teachers of different universities in the national capital Thursday sought an appropriate anti-racism law to check increasing violence against students of the northeast.
Coordination Committee of Associations of Teachers in Delhi (CCATD) said “racist violence” is bound to be detrimental to the interest of the nation and its democratic and multicultural fabric.
The demand came after two youths from Nagaland were assaulted by a gang of seven in the Sikanderpur area of Gurgaon Thursday.
Similarly, a student from Manipur was beaten up by a group of people in Bangalore Wednesday for not speaking in Kannada.
CCATD comprises of teachers from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Ambedkar University, Indraprastha University, Hamdard University and Indira Gandhi National Open University.
“The idea of India is based on the motto ‘Unity in Diversity’. There is an urgent need to sensitise police and the civil administration so that they react quickly and without any bias. There is a need to raise the consciousness of all people to greater tolerance towards each other,” CCATD said in a statement.
