Hue and cry over madarsas unwarranted: Left Front

Kolkata: Amid reports that suspected militants involved in the Oct 2 West Bengal blast were radicalised in a madarsa, the Left Front Friday expressed concern over the minority educational institutions coming under fire.

Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of creating an environment of fear, Left Front chairman Biman Bose said the majority community’s indulgence in communalism will result in the minority following suit.

“In some quarters, people are saying madarsas are destroying Bengal but there are many madarsas where Hindu students study. Making a hue and cry over the word madarsa are not at all warranted,” Bose told media persons here.

“If the majority indulges in communalism, then it results in the minority following suit, this is the norm in case of communalism. We are opposed to communalism and fundamentalism, be it by the majority or the minority,” he said.

Expressing concern over rising communalism in the country, the Left led by Communist Party of India-Marxist has called for strengthening the Left parties. In pursuance of the purpose, several Left parties held a meeting during the day.

“The RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh) is spreading its wings and with the help of BJP, a process of communalising the country is on. There is a need to forge a greater Left unity, to oppose this spread of communalism,” said Bose.

A convention will also be organised in the state in November by the Left parties against the rise of communalism and fundamentalism.
