Cairo : A court in Egypt Wednesday sentenced 25 people convicted of terrorist activities to various terms of imprisonment. One person aws acquitted.
The defendants were charged with establishing a terrorist cell in Cairo’s Nasr City district to carry out terrorist attacks throughout Egypt, state-run MENA news agency reported.
They were also accused of embracing extremist ideas that advocate attacks on the police and army personnel and state facilities, targeting ships transiting the Suez Canal and attacking foreign diplomatic missions to disrupt public order.
The terrorists were caught in 2012 on intelligence information from the National Security Agency.
The court sentenced 12 defendants to life, four to 15 years in prison, six to 10 years, and three to seven years in jail with hard labour.
Seven of the accused are still untraced and on the run.
