Assam Muslims meet against Islamic terror groups

Guwahati: At a time when the terrorist outfits claiming to be Islamic fundamentalist including Al-Qaida and others are purportedly trying to spread their wings in various locations of the country, the image of the religion has gone from bad to worst. The situation became more tensed after six persons were arrested by police from Assam’s Barpeta district for having direct or indirect involvement with Burdwan blast in West Bengal.

In the wake of such a situation, the Muslim intellectuals of Assam have come forward to form opinion against the anti-social elements which are defaming the religion.

In a meeting chaired by veteran journalist Haidar Hussian, in Guwahati, condemned all kinds of anti-social activities by these outfits which do it taking the name of Islam.

The meeting has also request the state and central government to punish the criminals involved in such ant-national activities after investigation.

“We also urge the people of the community to create awareness against all these anti-social elements who try to destroy peace and harmony. Another important thing which the people of the community should be careful of is that these anti-national elements might try to take the advantage of poverty and illiteracy of the Muslims in the state. All the social or students organizations and the civil society should be careful of this,” Haidar Hussain said.

Expressing its concern for the harassment on suspicion at the entire community, the meeting has urged the civil society and the media to be bit cautious.

“We condemn the people who are involved in such anti-social activities. But for that reason the entire community should not be harassed,” Hussain said.

Besides, the meeting has also urged the people of every community to maintain peace and harmony and respect the national integrity for a better tomorrow.

“We also make an appeal to all that everybody should be careful and stay away from making biased statements on sensitive issues for political gain. The opportunist individuals often try to do this to fulfill their vested interests,” he added.

The meeting which was attended by people from different walks of life also urged the state and central government to take initiatives for socio-economic development of the Muslims.

Senior advocate and president of Samajwadi Party of Assam unit Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, senior advocate and president of Assam Waqf Board Nekibur Zaman, former principal of Assam Medical College Dr Taufikur Rahman Borbora, former IAS officer Tabiul Hussain, Managing Director of NEF Law College Dr Zakir Hussain, retired lecturer of Gauhati University Dr Atowar Rahman, Assam Hilal Committee’s chairman Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, Gana Adhikar newspaper’s director Shahjahan Talukdar, senior journalist and activist Jamsher Ali and journalist Dilwar Hussain Majumdar were present among a host of other personalities during the meeting which took place at Haji Mushafir Khana in Guwahati.
