Delhi BJP chief says party ready for fresh polls

New Delhi : Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay Tuesday said the party was ready for fresh polls in the national capital even if they were to take place tomorrow.

“If the Lt. Governor (Najeeb Jung) recommends fresh elections in Delhi tomorrow, we are absolutely prepared,” Upadhyay told media persons here.

“But the LG is following the constitutional process by inviting the single largest party (BJP) to form the government… if and when we get the invite, we will critically analyse our strength,” the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi leader said.

Upadhyay interacted with the media after meeting BJP office bearers at the party headquarters over the controversy surrounding the video released by the Aam Aadmi Party Monday which showed Delhi BJP vice president Sher Singh Dagar tried to poach an AAP legislator.

Rubbishing the AAP’s accusations of horse-trading, Upadhyay said it was, in fact, the AAP itself which had written to the Lt. Governor a few months back, asking him not to hold fresh polls in Delhi.

“Why did they write that letter? Were they thinking of forming a government in Delhi by poaching MLAs from other parties?” Upadhyay said.

Blaming the AAP and its chief Arvind Kejriwal for the “mess” in Delhi, Upadhyay said the people of Delhi feel cheated and betrayed.

The BJP now has 28 members in the 70-seat Delhi legislature after three of its legislators got elected to the Lok Sabha. The AAP has 27 members and the Congress only eight. There are four other members in the house.

Delhi has been under President’s rule since Kejriwal quit as chief minister in February this year.
