Bhopal: Representatives of five organizations of survivors of the gas disaster in Bhopal today met with Mr. Ananth Kumar, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers, on the issue of additional compensation from Union Carbide, USA.
Despite his busy schedule in the city, the Minister who is in charge of all matters concerning the disaster in Bhopal gave a patient hearing to the delegation. The minister also promised to send a reply to the petition presented by the organizations for revision of figures of injury and death caused by the disaster in the curative petition for additional compensation pending before the Supreme Court of India.
The group of survivors and victims of the December 1984 Union Carbide disaster popularly known as Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the world’s worst industrial catastrophe, along with the representatives of five NGOs working for their welfare have announced that they would be going on an indefinite fast without water soon.
Addressing a Press conference here on Friday the representatives of the five NGOs said that the indefinite fast is to remind the Central and Madhya Pradesh governments of their responsibilities towards the curative petition for compensation pending in the Supreme Court of India. The NGOs said that they have conveyed their decision to go on indefinite fast without water as part of their non-violent direct action for adequate compensation to the Prime Minister, Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers and the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.
