New Delhi: The growth of bilateral trade between Brazil and India mirrors the strength of BRICS and it augurs well for all the developing countries, said Mr. Carlos Duarte, Ambassador of Brazil. He observed that any multilateral arrangement should be guided by a common interest of development, integration and industrialization. He averred that an international conference in Jamia on South-South Cooperation was not only ‘timely’ but also ‘pertinent’.
Addressing a distinguished gathering of academics, researchers and experts, Mr. Carlos presented a perspective on the importance of BRICS as a viable entity in the international order. He suggested that the proposed BRICS bank would provide safeguards in respect of liquidity and balance of payments to the participating countries besides promoting economic engagements with the developing countries.
Mr. Evgeny Bezcka, speaking on behalf of the Embassy of Russian Federation, underlined the shared philosophy of the BRICS countries which allowed them to hold on to truths and principles to strive for an equitable global order and thus create bedrock for any meaningful South-South engagement. He went on to suggest that commitment to this philosophy could alone guarantee mutually beneficial cooperation between developing countries.
Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, addressing the gathering said that cooperation amongst nations, especially in the region, was the need of the hour to ameliorate the living conditions of people who lived in abysmal poverty. Each country, he felt, had its strengths and there was an imperative need to synergize with the competencies of every nation. Prof. Talat Ahmad observed that apart from BRICS nations, other developing countries could come together and work as per the principles and developmental programmes of BRICS.
Earlier, Prof. U.A. Amin, Hony. Director, Centre for Management Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, welcomed the guests and presented an overview of academic programmes offered by the Centre for Management Studies, JMI and introduced the theme of the international conference that aimed at developing an alternate globalization from South.
Mr. Abad Ahmad, Chairman, Aga Khan Foundation, discussed the dynamics of the new global order and suggested that a conference of this kind would address the issues of inequality and bring various theoretical premises and empirical data to the fore for deliberations.
Dr. S. Veeramani, Conference Coordinator, proposed a vote of thanks.
