Election violence in Sri Lanka in check

Colombo : Police said Monday said that the situation in Sri Lanka, where violence erupted during provincial polls, was now under control.

The ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa won the election last week but faced stiff competition from the opposition United National Party (UNP).

Although the election was limited to the southeastern province of Uva, there are indications that Rajapaksa may call for early presidential polls to shore up flagging support in a bid for a third term, says Xinhua.

The tense political atmosphere has sparked clashes between supporters of the two main parties.

So far, 98 cases related to election violence and 22 cases of post-election violence have been registered in Uva. Police said 83 people have been arrested.
