Sydney : Australian police during the counter-terror raids in the country Tuesday detained one man on charges of engaging in terrorism-related activities.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Victorian police conducted raids in Kealba, Meadow Heights, Broadmeadows and Flemington suburbs of Melbourne Tuesday and arrested one person, Xinhua reported.
The arrested man is around 20 years old and worked in a pizza shop and will appear before the Melbourne magistrate’s court Tuesday afternoon.
In a statement released on Twitter, the Victorian police confirmed that several raids were underway but they were not in response to a threat to public safety.
The Australian authorities, earlier this month, carried out a series of raids in Sydney and Brisbane in what has been described as the nation’s largest counter-terrorism operation.
More than 800 police officers conducted searches at 25 places across Sydney and 70 places in Brisbane to thwart the attempts of a group of people who allegedly had intentions to carry out random attacks on individuals in Australia.
