Bohra spiritual chief elected AMU chancellor

Aligarh : Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the spiritual head of the Bohra community in india was on Saturday elected the new chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University.

The Syedna secured 77 votes in the AMU court, the varsity’s supreme governing body, as against 33 going to retired Indian Administrative Service officer and former AMU vice chancellor Mahmoordur Rahman.

The Syedna is the third generation of his family to head the varsity. His grandfather Syedna Tahir Saifuddin was chancellor from April 12, 1953 to April 28, 1965 while his father, Syedna Burhanuddin, held the post 1999-2002.

Nawab Ibne Saeed Khan of Chhatari was unanimously elected as the pro chancellor while Prof. Habibur Rahman, former vice chancellor of Agra University was elected as the honorary treasurer unopposed.

Six court members were elected to represent it in the varsity council. They are noted scientist Shahid Jameel, educationist and Indian Council for Cultural Relations vice president S.N. Pathan, former Indian hockey captain and Olympian Zafar Iqbal, Delhi Minority Commission’s former chairman Safdar H. Khan, former Uttar Pradesh minister Kaukab Hameed and Lucknow-based industrialist Khalid Masood.

Declaring the results, AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah (retd.) hoped that the university will be benefited from the elected personalities and they will continue to extend their cooperation in the development of the institution.

The court meeting was attended by 132 members including six MPs.
