Chennai/Aligarh: Days after his remarks about revoking voting rights to Muslims, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut continues to draw flak. The latest is filing of police complaints against him at two separate places across the country.
In Chennai, SM Pasha, a senior journalist and secretary general of Tamil Nadu chapter of All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, has filed a criminal complaint against Raut for his write up in Saamna, Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece. “Raut in his article had demanded that Muslims in India must be de-franchised by denying them voting rights. In other words, he wants Muslims to become slaves in their own beloved free, secular, democratic motherland,” Pasha said in his complaint to Chennai’s Police Commissioner.
“This demand is, we feel, is not just unreasonable but actually extremely malicious, mischievous and above all very inflammatory. Hence, there are a 100 % chances of a serious breach of peace and tranquility in the country, owing to passions, inflamed by the write-up,” he said and requested “to nip the mischief in the bud” by taking swift and appropriate criminal proceedings against Raut.
In Aligarh, Mohammad Pervez Siddiqui, president of Sir Syed Minority Foundation, too lodged a complaint with Civil Lines police station. “Raut’s demand is unconstitutional and an attempt to breach the Ganga-Jamunvi tehzeeb (syncretic culture) of India. Fortunately, the people of India are aware now and cannot be fooled with such remarks. But it hurts our sentiments for sure!” Siddiqui said in his complaint.
He demanded the police to lodge a case under relevant sections of the IPC (such as 153, 153A, 153B, 298 and 500; all related to promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion etc.) and take action as soon as possible, the statement said.
