Furious Sonia protests near Lok Sabha speaker

New Delhi: In a rare show of anger, a combative Congress president Sonia Gandhi rushed towards the Lok Sabha speaker’s chair on Wednesday after the Gandhi family was linked to black money.

Gandhi got upset over a comment by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Satish Gautam that the Indian Premier League cricket was being run with “black money belonging to the Gandhi family”.

The ensuing ruckus led to the adjournment of the house.

As soon as the remark was made, Congress members were up on their feet protesting loudly. They rushed towards Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. Gandhi, who normally keeps away from such protests, soon joined them.

Gautam made the comment as Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was speaking during a debate on the Lalit Modi row.

“I demand an apology from the Lok Sabha MP Gautam for saying ‘It’s her black money’,” Sonia Gandhi later told news channel NDTV.

“They can’t cast aspersions on me. They said this is Sonia Gandhi’s black money, and that is why I reacted like this and they have to apologize,” she added.

Later, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu told the house that the black money comment was not on record.

“If anything objectionable was said, it must be removed and if it is not on record, no discussion is needed,” Naidu said.
