The dharna scheduled to be held at Azad Maidan was called by Abu Asim Azmi, Maharashtra president of Samajwadi Party, for speedy implementation of Shri Krishna Commission Recommendations.

“Today we had scheduled a mega dharna demanding implementation of Shri Krishna Commission Recommendations for giving justice to the victims of the Mumbai communal riots between December 1992 and January 1993. Around 900 people had lost their lives in the communal clashes and most of them were from the minority community. If justice is delivered to the victims of 1993 Mumbai blast then why not for victims of Mumbai riots?” Azmi told TwoCircles.net.

The Sri Krishna Commission or the Commission of Inquiry was constituted by the Government of Maharashtra under Justice B N Sri Krishna for investigating the causes of the Bombay riots. Scores of victims, witnesses and alleged perpetrators were examined. Till date, the recommendations of the Commission have neither been accepted nor acted upon by the Maharashtra government.

“We had completed all the legal formalities for holding dharna at Azad Maidan. We had even given to the police in writing that nothing untoward will happen but without citing any reasons police asked us to desist from holding the dharna despite completing all formalities. We protested and offered arrest,” he said.

“We have rescheduled the dharna for August 20 at the same venue,” he added.
