Complete NRC by March 1: SC to Assam government

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Assam government to make available all resources including manpower for compilation of the draft and final National Register of Citizens (NRC) by March 1, 2016.

“As the state government will provide all assistance by making available the requisite and adequate number of employees working at different levels, the work shall be done in full swing and every endeavour shall be made to complete the report within the shortest time period,” said the bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman while relaxing the earlier order.

Earlier, the apex court had asked the state government to prepare the draft NRC by October 31 and publish the final by January 1, 2016.

While asking the Assam government to extend full support for preparation of the NRC, the court on Tuesday said none of the personnel engaged in preparation of the NRC would be assigned any other duty and they would be devoted to the task of completing it.

Having considered the report of the NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela, the bench directed that the personnel involved in preparation of the NRC would engage in the works related to NRC only.
