Women’s helpline working fine: UP Police

Lucknow : After a woman said she did not get any response from the police after being robbed, Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday denied the charge that the “1090 Women Powerline” set up to prevent crimes against women has failed in the state.

“Ours is a transparent working system, and we have so far solved 4.5 lakh complaints. That is a fairly decent number for the state,” Inspector General of Police (Women Powerline) Navneit Sikera told IANS.

People who are doubtful about the functioning of the women powerline should come and visit the office, the police official said.

The remarks came after the BJP on Monday attacked the Akhilesh Yadav government for failing to prevent crimes against women.

A woman, after being robbed in state capital Lucknow, said she did not get any response from the 1090 women’s helpline or the emergency number 100. The woman later posted her ordeal on social networking websites.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s state spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said this showed that not only were women unsafe, the government too was making false claims.

He alleged that emergency calls were not being received on many occasions even as police officials deployed for 1090 claimed much success in containing crimes against women.
