Rajya Sabha adjourned briefly over Ram temple issue

New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a brief adjournment over the issue of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, which was raised by Janata Dal-United leader K.C. Tyagi.

After the JD-U leader said that communal tension was being created in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, where the Babri mosque once stood, the government said it will abide by the court decision on the issue.

“A similar situation (to what prevailed earlier) is being created in Ayodhaya once again. Tension is being incited,” Tyagi said.

According to reports, Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas (trust) resumed the work of polishing stones meant for the construction of a proposed Ram temple in Ayodhya, where the Babri mosque was demolished.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said his BJP party was committed to follow the court’s decision.

“Stones are being polished since 1990, and the site is around one-and-a-half km away from the disputed site. Second, both our government and the party firmly believe that the decision of the court should be respected and we will respect it,” he said.

“There is no restriction on carving of stones; it does not mean the Ram temple is being constructed,” the minister said.

A ruckus that followed led to brief adjournment of the house.
