Nandurbar (Maharashtra): North Maharashtra city Nandurbar continues to remain tense even after more than one day of sudden violence between two groups of different communities. Police had imposed curfew for last two days.

Police have detained 150 odd people so far from both the communities.

The curfew imposed on Wednesday at around 6 pm was supposed to be lifted on Thursday evening. But another minor incident of stole pelting in the Alisa Mohalla led to the extension of the curfew till Friday.

As per reports in regional newspapers, on Wednesday the city came under violence following the protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and other Hindutva outfits against alleged cow slaughtering. The protests were organized despite prohibitory orders by police.

The situation was peaceful on Thursday with the exception of one stone pelting incident. As per reports a dead body of a minority community was being taken to a shrine for funeral on Thursday when someone pelted stones on the procession returning people and the situation again deteriorated.

There are nearly 150 men of both the communities detained so far by the police. Superintendent of Police M Ramkumar said,” The situation is under controlled but apprehension continues in people. We have arrested some men responsible for igniting the violence.”

Maulana Hafiz Nadeem Siddqui, President of Jamiat Ulama Maharashtra has cautioned police in arresting only the members of minority community and has demanded to release innocents who have been apprehended.

He appraised concerns of minority community people residing in the region to Mr Solunke, D.I.G. of Nashik Division and Girish Mahajan, Guardian Minister from Nandurbar. He requested both of them for impartial arresting in the case and stern action against anti-social elements responsible for disturbing peace and harmony in the region.

Meanwhile, State Minority Commission has called for report on the incident from the police. The newly appointed Chairperson Muhammad Hussain Amir directed for holding a meet between district collector and police to control the unruly situation and maintain peace in the region.

He instructed police officials to remain in contact with peace committee members to control the situation.
