Dhaka : Police Monday barred hundreds of pro-government activists from besieging the office of Bangladesh’s former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Police stopped the activists at an intersection in Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave, as they tried to move towards Zia’s office, where she has been living since Jan 5 after she was barred from attending a grand rally of her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xinhua news agency reported.
Police and witnesses said several hundred protestors under the banners of various pro-government organisations thronged the streets leading to Khaleda’s office for hours.
The protestors staged a demonstration and chanted slogans denouncing the anti-government strike and blockade, which was called for by the former premier.
So far, 63 people have been killed in the blockade-related violence.
