School students in Assam village debate over population explosion in India

Guwahati: The 2nd Inter School Debate Competition 2015 was organized by Alumni of Al-Ameen Islamic Model School and Bagh Hazarika Centre for Cultural Studies Guwahati on Saturday at Goroimari, Kamrup District, situated about 80 km from Guwahati.

The topic of the debate was ‘Population explosion is a curse for India’ and teams from five local schools participated in the programme.

The team awards were bagged by Al-Ameen Islamic Model School (Best Team) represented by Umme Rumman Islam and Habib Ahned, Majortop Higher Secondary School (1st Runner Up) represented by Delbar Hussain, and Sontoli Higher Secondary School (2nd Runner Up) represented by Jakir Hussain and Vakat Ali. The Best Debater’s Trophy went to Habib Ahmed of Al-Ameen Islamic Model School, Goroimari.

The debate competition was evaluated by convenor of Bagh Hazarika Centre for Cultural studies Rezwan Hussain and a three member team from Tata Institute of Social Studies (TISS) Guwahati consisting of Abdul Kalam Azad, Sunayana Dutta and Chiranjit Gayen. Nurul Islam Laskar, journalist and PR consultant, acted as the speaker.

All the winners received trophies, certificates and the books ‘I am Malala’ authored by Malala Yousufzai and ‘Wings of Fire’ written by APJ Abdul Kalam. All the prizes were sponsored by Sabur A Tapader of Unity Education Foundation.

Bilayat Hussain, Vice President of Al-Ameen School Management Committee, and Aman Wadud of Alumni of Al-Ameen addressed the gathering on the occasion. When put to vote, the motion won with overwhelming voice response from the audience.

Aman Wadud an advocate and president of AAIMS Alumni Association said, “Debates teach skills that serve individual well in school, in work place, in fulfilling responsibilities as citizens of democratic society. We started this competition last year with sole motive to extend these very benefits to the students of our locality. There is abundant talent in students of our area, but as it is rural area there is no platform to exhibit and hone their talent, our endeavour is give them that platform”.

Al-Ameen Islamic Model School principal Hashem Ali said, “Our school was established in 1991, at a time when there was no English Medium school in the entire constituency, it was a revolutionary steps towards development of our area and societies, we believe competition like this will only take our revolution forward”.
