German minister warns against suspecting all Muslims

Berlin : German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere has warned against general suspicion of Muslims after a deadly attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo Wednesday, media reported.

“Terrorist attacks have nothing to do with Islam,” Xinhua news agency quoted de Maiziere as saying in an interview with German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

Such attacks were directed against the entire society and its value system, he said.

People came from Syria and Iraq to Germany to escape the terrorism, now they should not come under suspicion just because they were Muslims, according to de Maiziere.

With regard to the current anti-Islamic Pegida movements in several German cities, he said: “We will not let Pegida decide our policy agenda.”
