Tihar superintendent suspended in jailbreak case

New Delhi : The Delhi government on Monday ordered the suspension of O.P. Bhatti, superintendent of jail number 7 in Tihar, in connection with a recent jailbreak case.

The suspension order was issued following approval from Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung. Disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against the suspended official.

The government action comes in the wake of escape of two inmates from Tihar’s jail number 7 on June 27.

“The government is of the view that a free and fair inquiry will only be possible after the officer concerned no longer remains in a position to influence the outcome of the probe,” the government order said.

Deputy Commissioner (West) B.S. Jaglan is already conducting an inquiry into the inmates’ escape.

The Delhi government directed the Tihar jail authorities to ensure that till the time the suspension order remained in force the “headquarters of this officer should be Delhi (police headquarters) and the said officer shall not leave the headquarters without obtaining prior permission of the competent authority”.

Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain sought a detailed report from Tihar authorities on the state of affairs in the prison and sought suggestions on steps to be taken to improve its functioning.
