Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has allowed plying of e-rickshaws in five cities in the state, an official said on Saturday.
At a meeting of the Road Transport Authority (RTA) on Friday, the state government okayed the use of e-rickshaws as passenger vehicles, as defined by the union government.
Plying of the battery operated rickshaws in Unnao, Hardoi, Lakhimpur, Sitapur and Lucknow has been given in-principle approval, an official told IANS.
Chairman of RTA and Lucknow divisional commissioner Mahesh Gupta said that legal provisions are now in place to assimilate these battery operated rickshaws as vehicles used for commuting and licenses will be given after registration.
Only those e-rickshaws will be registered which have been certified fit by the testing agencies.
Officials added that only those persons will be allowed to purchase and run the vehicles who have a license to run them.
