Baghdad : Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Baghdad on Monday morning on an official visit to discuss with Iraqi officials the military operation against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, a spokesperson of the Iraqi defence ministry told Efe news agency.
Dempsey will meet Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, also commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, in addition to Iraqi Defence Minister Khalid al-Obeidi, and other Iraqi officials.
Dempsey’s visit coincides with several military attacks launched by the Iraqi forces in tandem with civilian and tribal militias against the IS in an effort to recapture the IS-controlled northern areas of the Salahuddin province, in addition to the current military operations launched in Anbar province.
