Aligarh: Women’s College of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) celebrated its Founder’s Day, which is basically the wedding day of Sheikh Abdullah, pioneer of women’s education, and his wife Begum Waheed Jahan in 1902.
Fakeha Ayub Zinjani was conferred upon Papa Mian Padma Bhushan Award and Shabeena Fatima was awarded the M J Haider Memorial Academic Award by the Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah (Retd) on the occasion on Monday, March 23, a release from the AMU said.

Sara Naqvi was felicitated with the medals she won at the international level in badminton, another budding talent in Badminton, Kanwaljeet Kaur, who has excellently performed in badminton tournaments, was also honoured on this occasion and Kulsoom Salahuddin was felicitated too for winning six medals at the NCC camp.
In her welcome address, Professor Naima Gulrez, Principal, Women’s College thanked the Vice Chancellor General Shah for granting two new buses to Women’s College and Rs one crore for construction of two classrooms and one staff room.

She further said the Vice Chancellor has proposed modernization of the sports complex for girls with an amount of Rs five crore and added that an additional fund of Rs 10 lakh has been provided for development of library infrastructure in the college.
Addressing the Founder’s Day celebration, the Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen Shah paid rich tributes to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, popularly known as Papa Mian. He said that the AMU has got the possession of Abdullah Lodge and the building’s premises will be utilised as the sports complex and swimming pool. He said that after completion of 1500 bedded Women’s Hostel, the Indira Gandhi Hall will be allotted to Women’s College.

On this occasion, AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brig. Ali highlighted contributions of Sheikh Abdullah for promotion of female education.
Dr Roomana Siddiqui conducted the programme and Professor Imrana Nasim proposed a vote of thanks. Students of the Music Club presented the College Tarana and University Tarana, the release added.
