Over 2.5 lakh contractual teachers in Bihar end strike

Patna : The over a month-old-strike by some 2.5 lakh contractual school teachers in Bihar ended on Wednesday following a written assurance by the government to fulfil their demands, officials said.

“Thirty-five-day old strike of contractual school teachers ended after Bihar Education Minister P.K. Shahi’s written assurance to fulfil their demands,” an official of the education department said.

The indefinite strike had begun on April 9 after talks with the education minister had to be cancelled due to chaos at the meeting venue on April 8.

“Their strike has badly affected school education in the state,” officials said.

The striking teachers had locked hundreds of schools even as the state government warned of action and announced ‘no work, no pay’ for them last month.

The contractual teachers went on strike demanding pay at par with regular teachers and better working conditions in schools.
