Mumbai : Hours after a delegation of Shiv Sena MPs met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to register their opposition to the upcoming 9,900 MW Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP), Yuva Sena president Aditya Thackeray on Wednesday vowed that the party would not deviate from its stance and continue opposing the project.
“Nuclear energy is neither clean, nor green and its waste has no proper form of disposal after decades of its use world over,” Thackeray said in a series of tweets on the JNPP coming up in Ratnagiri in coastal Maharashtra.
“The voice of the locals in Jaitapur must be heard. Risk be seen. Development cannot risk life. Sustainable development is the need today. The locals do not want 100 percent risk in Jaitapur, Maharashtra. It cannot be forced and put there. We’ve constantly voiced this issue, will do so,” he said.
Thackeray said nuclear energy was a technology that was now being refused by countries like Germany, Switzerland, the US, Japan and many other developed nations.
“What is of great concern is why our nation accepting the refuse of the most advanced countries of the world-nuclear technology. Germany has shut 11 of 17 of its nuclear plants.
“By 2022, it will shut down all its nuclear plants and move towards renewable energy sources. India has a huge capacity for renewable energy. Development is surely needed, but sustainable development one that doesn’t risk human race.
“JNPP was forced on locals by the UPA 2. Two locals were shot dead in protests. Largest power plant being forced on locals. Jaitapur power plant is the largest in the world, in seismic zone 3, in the path of the monsoon winds. A minor leak can wipe out the nation,” he warned.
