Parrikar to go to Kashmir, visit Siachen

New Delhi : Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir during his two-day visit to the state from Friday, while the Siachen glacier will be his first stop, official sources said.A

The minister will land at Thoise airfield on Friday, from where he will go to Siachen. He will also visit the 14 Corps headquarters in Leh, where he will be briefed about the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) with the Pakistani side and Line of Actual Control along the Chinese side.

Later in the day he will come to Srinagar, where he will meet Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Governor N.N. Vohra.

On Saturday, the minister will visit Jammu, and is also expected to visit some forward areas.

While Parrikar has been to the state earlier, this will be the first time he will go to Siachen after taking over as the defence minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already been to Siachen glacier – the world’s highest battlefield at a height of 5,400 metres.
