Rahul Gandhi to visit Kerala

New Delhi : Taking forward his proactive role, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi would undertake a two-day trip to Kerala next week, during which he is scheduled to meet fishermen and rubber growers.

Gandhi, who would visit the state on May 26-27, would begin the Kerala visit by addressing a youth Congress rally on May 26 evening in Calicut city.

“On May 27 morning, he will interact with fishermen in the coastal town of Chavakkad at Thrissur district,” senior Congress leader P.C. Chacko said.

“He would also address a meeting of fishermen on the beach,” Chacko told IANS.

Fishermen have been agitating in this small coastal town against the Narendra Modi government’s decision to extend trawling ban from 47 days to 61 days.

During the recently concluded budget session of parliament, Gandhi accused the central government of going against the interests of fishermen in coastal states, saying a ban by the ‘suit-boot ki sarkar’ was not allowing them to do fishing but foreign trawlers were allowed to do so.

Chacko said Gandhi would also meet rubber growers in Aluva town in Cochin on May 27 evening.

“Natural rubber prices are crashing. Rahulji will hear the grievances of rubber growers,” he added.

Since his return from a 56-day sabbatical, Gandhi has been seen in an increasingly proactive role, taking on the Modi government and visiting various places, including his constituency Amethi and states like Telangana.
