Modi’s Kashmir visit: 22-year-old youth succumbs to tear gas shell shot by CRPF

Srinagar : Barely hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his Valley visit, a youth from Srinagar was brutally killed by security forces after he was hit by a tear gas shell in his head on Thursday, leading to his death.

The youth, identified as Gowhar Nazir Dar, a 22 year old youth studying engineering, was hit by tear gas shell in Zainakote area of Srinagar, succumbed to his injuries in Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura.

According to initial reports, on Thursday evening, when Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were withdrawing from Zainakote in the outskirts of Srinagar, hundreds of people came on roads protesting against the curbs placed on people to foil the million march to which troopers retaliated by tear gas shelling which hit the deceased youth from a very close range causing his death.

The killing trigged outrage among people whereas separatist leader have called for a complete shutdown on Sunday.

In a statement, Jama’at-e-Islami, J&K, while condemned the killing said, “We denounce the brutality perpetrated by Indian forces upon innocent peaceful protestors against Modi’s unwelcome visit to the valley resulting in the death of Gowhar Nazir Dar.”

Geelani’s faction Hurriyat (G) termed the killing of 22 year old youth as a ‘Historical Gift’ on the ‘historical event’ of Modi’s visit.

“The killings of innocent people particularly teen age students have been a norm and an old tradition of Indian occupational forces in Jammu and Kashmir. The pro-Indian political parties particularly the ruling RSS backed PDP is directly responsible for the innocent killings in Kashmir, because they have always played the role of advocators of Indian Military Occupation in the state,” Hurriyat (G) said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Lone, has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the killing and decided to enforce restrictions in areas falling under seven police stations in downtown city including Zainakote and Maisuma.
