Another held from Kolkata for alleged ISI link

Kolkata: Two days after a suspected ISI agent was detained, the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police on Monday nabbed the man’s brother from the city on charges of spying, police said.

While Zafar Khan was nabbed on Monday, Akhtar Khan was picked up by the STF on Saturday on suspicion of being an agent of Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

“Akhtar’s interrogation revealed that Zafar (48) was also involved with him in spying. We suspect he is involved with the ISI,” said Deputy Commissioner (STF) Akhilesh Kumar Chaturvedi.

“We have seized several incriminating documents from his possession.”

Zafar will be presented before a court on Tuesday.

Police claimed they have seized many documents and fake Indian currency notes of face value of over Rs.1.7 lakh from Akhtar, who was on Sunday remanded in police custody till November 29.

Akhtar, who used several aliases, gathered intelligence for Pakistan while working as a bartender in Kolkata. He is believed to have lived in Karachi from 1985 before coming to India in 2008.

Zafar’s lawyer, meanwhile, accused police of wrongfully arresting his client.

“He (Zafar) was not even in touch with his elder brother and both resided at two different places in the city. He has been framed,” said his counsel Fazle Ahmed Khan.
